74-year-old woman declared dead found alive in funeral home
A woman who was pronounced dead was found alive hours later in a funeral home on Tuesday, June 4.
The New York Times reported that Constance Glantz, 74, from Nebraska was pronounced dead at 9:44 a.m. at the Mulberry at Waverly nursing home, during which an investigation wasn't necessary at the time of her death.
She was transported to Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln, as someone “they believed was a deceased individual."
But a funeral employee preparing Glantz's body found out that she was still breathing two hours after she was declared dead. They immediately called 911 for assistance.
CPR was performed on her and she was brought to a hospital, where she died around 4:00 p.m.
"LSO has been to the nursing home, and we have started our investigation into what happened. At this point, we have not been able to find any criminal intent by the nursing home, but the investigation is ongoing," Lancaster County Sheriff Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said during a press conference.
The cause of her death wasn't specified, and an autopsy is underway.
Glantz's family was notified about what happened, though authorities didn't provide other information about her, "including how long she’d been in hospice or whether she had any medical conditions," according to NYT.
“This is a very unusual case,” Houchin said. “I’ve been doing this 31 years, and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point before.”
