German man allegedly got 90 COVID-19 shots so he could sell forged vaccination passes
A 60-year-old man in Germany reportedly got himself vaccinated against COVID-19 a total of 90 times so he could sell forged vaccination passes.
It is said that the unnamed Madgeburg resident repeatedly received jabs from vaccination centers in Saxony until he was busted by the police, after showing up for the shot for the second day in a row, German news agency dpa reported on April 3.
Reports also said he got different brands of the COVID vaccine. The effects of the multiple shots on the man's health are still unclear.
The 60-year-old was not detained but is under investigation. Police have also confiscated several blank vaccination cards from him.
In recent months, German police have conducted raids in connection with forgery of vaccination passports.
According to Financial Times, Germany is the third country with the most shares of unvaccinated population in western Europe. Numbers from November 2021 showed 14 million people are eligible for the jab but have decided not to receive it.
In a study by Erfust University on vaccination hesitancy, they found that 41% of the unvaccinated German population found the jab "unnecessary."
Vaccine passports, however, are required in Germany to access public venues like restaurants, theaters, swimming pools, and workplaces.
The country is seeing high infection to the coronavirus in the recent weeks—on Sunday, it logged 74,053 new infections, less than a week after recording 11,224 daily cases.
Yet, wearing masks in public places, except when riding public transportation, is no longer mandated.
Health experts believe the recent surge of cases is due to the Omicron BA.2 subvariant, which is the most dominant strain of the virus.
As of writing, Germany has recorded a total of 130,969 deaths due to COVID-19.
