Wave 89.1 announces final broadcast: 'What a wild ride it has been, Manila'

Radio station Wave 89.1 announced that it’s going off the air.

“While our heart is being pinched, we want to officially announce that Wave 89.1 has made its final broadcast,” it said in a statement posted on Facebook on late April 15.

“We want to thank everyone for all the love and support over the years. What a wild ride it has been, Manila.”

The station noted that it’s been receiving many stories on how it touched listeners’ lives and how they grew up with it.

“The feels are real,” Wave 89.1 said, adding that there are so many memories, including the good and the bad, the laughter and the tears.

“We changed the game. No one can say otherwise,” it said.

It thanked its former DJs, managers, directors, techs, guests, and “anyone who has ever set foot in our studio” for helping the station make history.

Wave 89.1 is known for playing rap, hip hop, RnB, and urban music.

Some Filipino hip-hop artists expressed their gratitude in the comments section. Singer-songwriter Thyro Alfaro thanked the station for "all your help in my career."

In a separate post, Alfaro noted that it was in 2011 when it put him on the map.

"Kung walang Wave 89.1, walang Hold me clooooose by your siiiide..." he said, referring to his song Kiss (Never Let Me Go) with Yumi.

Shehyee dropped a simple "Maraming salamat Wave" with a fist bump emoji.

Flict-G, who's known for being part of Nakakamiss and the Paglisan remake, added, "Maraming salamat po sa pagsuporta niyo sa pinoy hiphop at sa mga artist na nangangailangan ng radio exposure. Walang makakalimot sa pangalan at ambag niyo."

Radio personalities bid goodbye

Radio jocks of Wave 89.1 also chimed in with their heartfelt messages of support.

A lot were asking DJ DannieBoi about the shutdown. He said that "some changes have occurred" and that "a new group is coming in and will be doing a different type of programming."

"Radio will forever be my passion, I will be back somewhere again soon, God willing," he added.

DJ Flava Matikz, who hosted The Bounce, thanked Wave 89.1 for helping "homegrown talent as well as showing the Philippines how much we love HIPHOP & RNB music and culture." He said, "We kept it real and definitely changed the game."

Artist and educator Monique Señeres said that she is grateful that her hip-hop group 7 Shots and her solo singles were included in Wave's charts. She also thanked the station for giving her and Angel Jones a weekly segment on The Hype Show called Beautyism.
