Goodbye, Ministop! Hello, Uncle John's!

Robinsons Convenience Stores Inc. (RCSI) in a Sept. 22 statement announced that it will be rebranding its popular convenience store—home to the now-eponymous fried chicken and deep-fried stuffed bread Kariman.

RCSI noted that it's banking on the popularity of Uncle John's Fried Chicken, deeming it as its best-selling product.

"It is also a celebration of the legacy of the late founder, Mr. John Gokongwei Jr. of Robinsons Retail, the holding company of the convenience store chain," it added.

Last April, the company held a contest asking the public for new name suggestions. With over 80,000 participants, it said "Uncle John’s" was the top choice among the entries.

“Uncle John's has become a household name for consumers on-the-go, looking for convenient options without sacrificing quality and taste in food," said RCSI General Manager Suresh Ramalinggam. "Using it as the platform in the reinvention of our stores provides us with a stronger brand story that our customers can relate to."

The soon-to-be Uncle John's said it will "diversify" its menu and offer new products.

Last February, parent company Robinsons Retail acquired the 40% stake of Ministop Japan in RCSI, making it a 100% Filipino owned company.

To date, there are over 460 Ministop branches in the Philippines.
