The House of Representatives has awarded Carlos Yulo P14 million for winning two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas P2.5 million each for their bronze medals.
The Filipino Olympians were received by Speaker Martin Romualdez and other house leaders in a congressional reception on Aug. 14.
Romualdez gave Yulo P6 million (P3 million for each gold) while over 300 House members awarded P8 million.
"Thank you very much for all your prayers and support to all of us," the gymnast said.
The medalists were also each recognized with a "Congressional Medal of Excellence," a citation noting Filipino achievers in fields of sports, business, medicine, science, and arts and culture.
All Filipino Olympians and their coaches were also given Congressional recognition for their performance at the Paris games.
“This historic finish is a testament to the progress and potential of Philippine sports. It highlights the importance of continued support for our athletes, who have brought honor to our country. Let this be the beginning of even greater successes in the future,” Romualdez said.
When the athletes arrived from France on Aug. 13, they were given a heroes' welcome at Malacañang Palace by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the first family.
The Office of the President rewarded each Filipino Olympian with P1 million and P500,000 for their coaching staff.
