LOOK: Pasig's plans to transform city hall into a 'campus' for 450th anniversary

Pasig just celebrated its 450th anniversary, and Mayor Vico Sotto announced plans to reconstruct the the city hall and turn it into a "campus" that aims not only to improve the building's integrity but also offer new services to Pasigueños.

In a ceremony on July 2, Sotto said the city hall needs to be reconstructed after independently-hired architects and engineers from a consultancy firm found its columns, beams, and girders "structurally inadequate." The seismic gaps are also "insufficient to prevent the structures from hitting each other in a strong earthquake.”

A day before, Sotto in a Facebook post said they'd long planned for it not because of want but because of need.

"Our sense of urgency is strong because the danger continues to become more imminent," he said.

A video presentation during the July 2 ceremony showed an artistic rendition of the Pasig City Hall Campus and its features, including open spaces for constituents, a fountain, food stalls, earthquake-proof buildings, evacuation centers, a senior citizen center, a health clinic, and laboratory, among many others.

The building is expected to be completed over the next two years.

"This may be the biggest project in the history of Pasig City," Sotto said.

In his Facebook post, Sotto also said that if Pasig will "embark on this daunting mission, we might as well do it excellently and with foresight."

"First, we must make sure that we solve our current problems using the most efficient means possible," he said. "Beyond this, we must also make sure that what we build is FUTURE PROOF (and not short-sighted in terms of safety, logistics, development, etc)."
