UP overachiever Tiffany Uy among Physician Licensure Exam topnotchers

Tiffany Grace Uy is adding another feather to her cap the third time around as she lands on the top 5 of this year’s Physician Licensure Exam.

In the results posted by the Professional Regulation Commission earlier today, November 26, Uy ranked Top 5 with a grade of 88.08 percent. She shared the spot with Hannah Chito of UP Manila and Chino Samson of Lyceum-Northwestern University.

Ranking number 1 out of this year’s 3,538 board passers is Jerome Lapides Garcia, also of UP Manila, with a score of 88.67 percent.

In 2015, Uy graduated with a BS Biology degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman summa cum laude. She made headlines for having an almost perfect general weighted average (GWA) of 1.004, the highest in the university’s history since World War II.

Uy’s grade exceeded the record of John Gabriel Pelias, a BS Mathematics major who graduated in 2011 with a GWA of 1.016.

Fueled by her dream to become a doctor like her parents, she went on to pursue medicine at the UP Manila College of Medicine.

Five years later, Uy once again bested everyone in class when she graduated magna cum laude. She received her Faculty Gold Medal during the UP College of Medicine Commencement Exercises held virtually on July 26, 2020.

Aside from the Faculty Gold Medal, Uy was awarded the Dr. Gregorio T. Alvior, Jr. Award for Academic Excellence during the ceremony.

While her record-breaking grades have made Uy a wonder student in the eyes of many Filipinos, she believes that education is more than just the numbers.

"Grades are really not important. At the end of the day, a number or piece of paper won't mean anything. When I make a mistake, I get sad not because of the number. But I worry, what if that mistake means someone will die on my table someday? I guess that's the motivation," Uy revealed in a 2015 interview with Karen Davila.

Like a true doctor, Uy has since then devoted her hard-earned knowledge to the betterment of her countrymen.

She said in her graduation speech that year, “Beloved friends, as you set out into the enigmatic wilderness of life, my wish for you and for our country, is that you harness your limitless and evolutionary power towards building a sustainable and fair nation.  After all, a life motivated by service is the most meaningful. So, may you keep learning, keep believing and keep evolving.”
