New York woman shot dead after being driven to wrong address

A 20-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a New York shooting on April 15.

Looking for a friend's house in upstate New York, Kaylin Gillis was riding in a car with three other people in the rural town of Hebron.

The group made a wrong turn to the property of homeowner Kevin Monahan. As they pulled up in the driveway of the wrong address, Monahan came out onto his porch and fired two shots, of which one fatal round hit Gillis, according to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy.

The dead zone had limited cell phone service, so the group had to drive all the way to the neighboring town of Salem to call 911. Though emergency personnel attempted to revive Gillis through CPR, it was too late.

Monahan initially refused to come out when officers arrived, but he was later taken into custody after authorities communicated with him for an hour. The shooter was put behind bars at the Warren County jail on a charge of second-degree murder.

The victim's loved ones have since organized a fundraiser with a $50,000 (P2.8 million) goal via GoFundMe.

They have raised $37,586 (P2.1 million) from 511 donations as of writing. The highest single donation so far is $2,000 (P112,000).

"On behalf of the Gillis family, we would like to thank everyone who has offered their love and prayers as they embark on this incredibly difficult journey of grief and healing. The dollars raised through this fund will go directly to the Gillis family for use toward Kaylin’s funeral expenses and any immediate financial needs," the fundraiser read.
