Woman claims her ex-husband poisoned her into disability for years amid cheating suspicions

A doctor from China claimed she was slowly poisoned by her ex-husband amid his cheating allegations, causing her physical disability and severe second-degree injury over the years.

Liu Chang said her husband Gao Zhisen, also a doctor, poisoned her with hormone-based drugs since 2016, over a year after they married, the South China Morning Post reported.

Recalling the "cold medicine" she took, Chang said she felt unwell and suffered from blurred vision, leg cramps, dramatic weight gain, and a large number of cracks appearing on her skin.

In September 2017, when the couple separated after fighting, Chang's mother found a large amount of medication at home, including hormonal drugs. They divorced the following December.

At the time, Chang filed a complaint with the police for her husband's supposed attempted murder, though lacked hard evidence.

“I have become disabled and severely depressed because of this incident," she said. "He has destroyed my life."

Things took a turn in April 2018, when Zhisen was suspended for seven days and fined 500 yuan (P4,000) for “taking medicines without the consent of the head nurse."

In 2019, Chang took to social media her story, getting national attention.

And finally, in March 2022, police said her case was "eligible for filing." Zhisen was arrested the following April.

A private hearing took place last Jan. 11.

Gao has denied poisoning his ex-wife, saying they “drank the same glass of water and the same carton of milk" while together. The hormonal drug, he said, was used to treat a condition that Chang had.

He also insisted that his ex-wife was cheating on him with a local official. Chang has since denied the accusations.
