Warning to those who are squeamish about eyes...

A doctor from California had to remove a total of 23 contact lenses from her patient's eye after the latter forgot to remove them every night and replace them the next morning.

On her Instagram account, California Eye Associates Ophthalmologist Dr. Katerina Kurteeva warned about the dangers of sleeping with your contact lenses as she showed a video of her carefully removing several green-colored lenses from inside a woman's eye with a cotton bud.

"A rare occasion when someone 'forgot' to remove contact lenses at night and kept on putting a new one in every morning for 23 days in a row! I got to deliver the contact lens bunch yesterday in my clinic," Kurteeva wrote in her recent post.

The video quickly went viral online, gaining nearly three million views as of this writing. In another post, Kurteeva shared close-up pictures showing the contact lenses and said that she was glad to have had an opportunity to educate the public about contact lens hygiene wear.

"I had to use a very fine surgical instrument—jeweler forceps—to separate the contact lenses. They were essentially glued together after sitting under the eyelid for a month," she detailed.

Many flooded Kurteeva's post with comments about how they were disturbed at what happened to the woman.

"What kind of damage could she have done to her eyes? And what was the moment when she realized something wasn't right? Was she experiencing pain?" one user commented.

Another one felt sympathy for the woman and wrote, "Poor thing, you can tell she's an elderly woman. She probably didn't think much of it. A lot of older people think pain and discomfort are usually normal and take it as much as possible because they're old and think and feel that no one really cares."

Kurteeva emphasized the importance of removing contact lenses in a follow-up video. To take them out properly without scratching your cornea, she instructed that you must use your index finger from both hands and squeeze them out gently from the side to the center.

After removing your contact lenses, you must place them in a clean storage container prefilled with cleaning solution before covering them with a cap to keep them moist overnight. Apply some eyedrops afterward to prevent your eyes from drying.
