Limited face-to-face classes for degree programs in Alert Level 3 start on January 31—CHED
Limited in-person classes for higher education institutions (HEIs) in areas under Alert Level 3 are set to begin on Monday, Jan. 31, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced, noting that schools should practice health and protocols at all times.
The recommendation was given by the Department of Health - Public Services Team “given the surge in COVID-19 cases,” CHED’s statement read.
As part of CHED’s plan to reopen classes, limited face-to-face classes for colleges and universities located in areas under Alert Level 2 may start “anytime.”

“HEIs intending to hold limited face-to-face classes during the COVID-19 pandemic must be willing to assume the responsibilities of reopening of their campuses based on their capability to comply with health and safety protocols, to retrofit their facilities, and to get the support of their stakeholders,” CHED said.
HEIs should also inform their respective CHED Regional Office by submitting a self-assessment checklist and notarized affidavit of undertaking prior to reopening.
For clustering of COVID-19 cases, the preventive suspension of in-person classes will be based on the “assessment and decision” of the institution’s crisis management committee in consultation with the Local Task Force Against COVID-19.
Under Alert Level 3, colleges and universities should only allow a maximum of 30% indoor venue capacity and 50% outdoor capacity for fully-vaccinated individuals. Unvaccinated students are not allowed to attend.
The CHED hasn’t released a list of HEIs that applied for the reopening of classes in Alert Level 3, as of this writing.
The Philippines recorded 28,007 additional COVID-19 infections, pushing the country’s total to 3,026,473, as of Jan. 11.
