The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has approved extending the voter registration for three more weeks.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenes announced on Twitter that the Comelec en banc has unanimously approved the proposal.

Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon also confirmed the extension and posted the schedule on her Twitter account.

Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas earlier announced on Sept. 29 over CNN's The Source that the Comelec en banc "will formalize the extension of voter registration."

Voter's registration will first close on Sept. 30 to make way for the filing of certificates of candidacy, which is scheduled to run from Oct. 1 to 8. Then the voter's registration will reopen on  Oct. 11 and close on Oct. 30.

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate pushed for the extension by fast-tracking the passage of a bill that would do so.

"Avail the extension. Huwag naman natin hintayin ulit na kung saan 'yung deadline, doon tayo magpaparehistro," Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas advised.

Comelec announced that there are already 62 million registered voters out of the Philippine Statistic Authority's 73.3 million voting population projection.
