Celebs, Pinoy netizens cope with oil price hikes through hilarious memes and reactions on social media

Published Mar 11, 2022 1:12 pm

As retail pump prices soar to record levels, Filipinos have been coping online with the situation with, what else, memes and humor.

With the country, as a net oil importer, being largely at the mercy of prices at the world market, most have no recourse but to grin and bear with the situation... and post memes, of course. Here are some of the funniest and most relatable reactions we’ve found on the internet. (Warning: some posts contain explicit language.)

Joaquin T. Palmones II shared a hilarious video of a man “changing” the fuel prices at an unnamed gas station on Facebook.

“Kuya, wag! Wag! Kuya, shot! Shot! Kuya, don’t! Don’t you dare,” an unidentified person shouted out to the man.

Meanwhile, Facebook page Spin and Shoot said in jest that bikers don’t have to worry about rising fuel prices—only to add that bicycle parts are just as expensive.

Netizens also pointed out that weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz wouldn’t be affected by the fuel hikes, as she received a lifetime supply of free fuel as incentive from Phoenix Philippines Inc. after she bagged the Olympic gold medal in July 2021.

Even celebrities can’t help but react to the spike in fuel prices as well.

Singer-actress Maris Racal posted a video of herself reacting to the popular song Maalala Mo Kaya on Facebook with the caption: “Ang mahal ng gas.”

Actor Xian Lim said he’s taking a “pass” from long rides to save money on gas.

“Wala ba akong karapatan mag mahal?! Ang dami dami niyong sinasabi. Ayoko na. Pag nagmamahal ako, ang daming taong nagagalit. -Gasolina Pass muna sa long rides. Kape kape muna sa kanto,” Lim wrote.
