John Legend dedicates Billboard Music Awards performance to wife Chrissy Teigen
R&B singer-songwriter John Legend took to the Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) 2020 stage and dedicated his Never Break performance to his wife Chrissy Teigen, who suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage two weeks ago.
An emotional and tearful Legend, seated behind a grand piano, whispered before his moving performance, “This is for Chrissy.” In his all-white suit, Legend sang, “We got a good thing, babe. Whenever life is hard. We’ll never lose our way ‘cause we both know who we are.”
“He and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world, the highs and the lows. Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time and I’m thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with us,” said three-time BBMAs host and Legend’s co-judge in The Voice Kelly Clarkson as she introduced the singer.
The awards show was broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with safety protocols that took effect, including no audience, and only half of the performances performed live and the rest were pre-recorded, including that of Legend’s.
Teigen lost their third child they named Jack in late September.
“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” Teigen wrote on Instagram. “Every day can’t be full of sunshine. On these darkest of days, we will grieve; we will cry our hearts out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it."
