Another thing to do is inspect the electrical system so that you can dry all components and check for corrosion.

One should also gently pump your brake pedal several times. This allows the brake pads to make contact with the rotors or drums, helping them dry out.

To restore your vehicle's interior, thoroughly clean and dry all components. Remove seats, carpets, and padding for effective cleaning. Speed up the drying process by using fans and dehumidifiers.

Corpus emphasized the importance of replacing any parts or fluids exposed to floodwater. If carpets, seats, or padding cannot be fully restored, they should be replaced to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Driving over floods

It is important to exercise caution and refrain from driving through flooded areas as they pose a risk. According to Corpus, following general rules to avoid damaging your vehicle is essential when driving in flood-prone areas.

"If the water is deeper than the bottom of your doors, don't attempt to cross," he said. "Water can damage the engine, transmission, brakes, and electrical system. It can also stall the car, leaving the driver stranded."

On the same note, Manuel said that water entering the exhaust or intake manifold can reach the combustion chamber, causing compression and damaging valves and pistons.

Before attempting to drive through flooded areas, the mechanical engineer advised to carefully assess the depth and speed of the water. Whenever possible, it's best to consider alternative routes to ensure safety. But if caught in the middle of the flood, Corpus recommended that motorists prioritize their safety and immediately exit their vehicles to seek higher ground if the water is rising.

Note also the highest water level on the car's exterior and interior. This information will be valuable for insurance claims and assessing damage.

Once the water recedes, contact a mechanic or towing service to safely remove and assess the vehicle.

Flood damage repair costs

The cost of repairing a flood-damaged vehicle can vary significantly based on the severity of the damage and which parts of the car are affected.

"Repair costs vary widely depending on the extent of the damage. It can range from a few thousand pesos for minor repairs to hundreds of thousands for major engine or electrical work. In some cases, the car might be declared a total loss by your insurance company," Corpus said.

• If you live in a flood-prone area, invest in a car snorkel kit. A snorkel kit raises the air intake of your engine, allowing you to drive through deeper water safely.

During the flood

• Stay informed: Listen to the radio or check online for updates on flood warnings and road closures.
• Avoid flooded roads: If you see a flooded road, turn around and find another way. Remember, "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
• Drive slowly and carefully: If you must drive through shallow water, drive slowly and steadily in the middle of the road. Avoid sudden acceleration or braking.
• Watch out for hazards: Be alert for debris, potholes, and other obstacles hidden in the water.
