GUIDE: What to do if your car has been submerged in floodwater
Recent days have seen parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, transformed into a waterway, with videos of cars floating down flooded streets circulating online. Typhoon Carina-enhanced monsoon rains have intensified, prompting a state of calamity declaration and causing widespread flooding and road closures.
Understanding the potential dangers of driving through floodwaters is crucial as it can not only ensure your safety but also save you from costly repairs. To help you navigate these hazardous waters safely, we've compiled essential tips on what to do if your car is caught in a flood or suffers water damage.
According to Robert Michael Corpus, a mechanical engineer, the first rule in repairing or rescuing a flooded car is not to start the engine as water can damage its internals.
"Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts. Then, have the car towed to a dry area for assessment," he told PhilSTAR L!fe.
This also rings true for John Mark Manuel, who has worked as an automotive technician for eight years.
"Unang ginagawa po namin kapag ang sasakyan ay inabot nang baha ay tinatanggalan namin ng connection sa battery terminal [and] standard towing para maiwasan ang mas malaking damage sa auto," he said.
Manuel also said not to attempt to start the car's cranking procedure. Water may have entered parts of the engine or electronics, which could cause a short circuit.
In addition, Corpus advised checking essential vehicle fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant. He said if these "look milky or contaminated, they need to be replaced."
Another thing to do is inspect the electrical system so that you can dry all components and check for corrosion.
One should also gently pump your brake pedal several times. This allows the brake pads to make contact with the rotors or drums, helping them dry out.
To restore your vehicle's interior, thoroughly clean and dry all components. Remove seats, carpets, and padding for effective cleaning. Speed up the drying process by using fans and dehumidifiers.
Corpus emphasized the importance of replacing any parts or fluids exposed to floodwater. If carpets, seats, or padding cannot be fully restored, they should be replaced to prevent mold and mildew growth.
Driving over floods
It is important to exercise caution and refrain from driving through flooded areas as they pose a risk. According to Corpus, following general rules to avoid damaging your vehicle is essential when driving in flood-prone areas.
"If the water is deeper than the bottom of your doors, don't attempt to cross," he said. "Water can damage the engine, transmission, brakes, and electrical system. It can also stall the car, leaving the driver stranded."
On the same note, Manuel said that water entering the exhaust or intake manifold can reach the combustion chamber, causing compression and damaging valves and pistons.
Before attempting to drive through flooded areas, the mechanical engineer advised to carefully assess the depth and speed of the water. Whenever possible, it's best to consider alternative routes to ensure safety. But if caught in the middle of the flood, Corpus recommended that motorists prioritize their safety and immediately exit their vehicles to seek higher ground if the water is rising.
Note also the highest water level on the car's exterior and interior. This information will be valuable for insurance claims and assessing damage.
Once the water recedes, contact a mechanic or towing service to safely remove and assess the vehicle.
Flood damage repair costs
The cost of repairing a flood-damaged vehicle can vary significantly based on the severity of the damage and which parts of the car are affected.
"Repair costs vary widely depending on the extent of the damage. It can range from a few thousand pesos for minor repairs to hundreds of thousands for major engine or electrical work. In some cases, the car might be declared a total loss by your insurance company," Corpus said.
"More or less P30,000 up to P150,0000 depende sa damage at brand nang unit, kung high-end, mas mahal," Manuel underscored.
Additional tips
Corpus emphasizes the importance of caution and preparedness when driving in flood-prone areas. To safeguard yourself and your vehicle, he recommends following these essential guidelines:
Before the flood
- Know your area: Be aware of the flood-prone areas in your neighborhood and plan your routes accordingly.
- Prepare an emergency kit: Keep a waterproof bag in your car with essentials like a flashlight, first-aid kit, drinking water, snacks, and extra clothes.
- Check your insurance: Ensure your car insurance covers flood damage.
- Have your car serviced regularly. Check the brakes, tires, and electrical systems to ensure they are in good condition.
- If you live in a flood-prone area, invest in a car snorkel kit. A snorkel kit raises the air intake of your engine, allowing you to drive through deeper water safely.
During the flood
- Stay informed: Listen to the radio or check online for updates on flood warnings and road closures.
- Avoid flooded roads: If you see a flooded road, turn around and find another way. Remember, "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
- Drive slowly and carefully: If you must drive through shallow water, drive slowly and steadily in the middle of the road. Avoid sudden acceleration or braking.
- Watch out for hazards: Be alert for debris, potholes, and other obstacles hidden in the water.
- If your car stalls: Do not try to restart it. Get out of the car and move to higher ground immediately.
After the flood
- Have your car inspected: Even if your car seems fine, have a mechanic inspect it for hidden damage.
- Clean and disinfect your car: Floodwater can be contaminated, so clean and disinfect your car thoroughly.
- Report any damage to your insurance company: If your car has been damaged by floodwater, contact your insurance company to file a claim.
