‘Not just for banging’: TV reporter uses condom to cover mic during storm coverage
“Condoms… they’re not just for banging.”
That’s how TMZ reacted to a Florida reporter who made the rounds online just recently for covering her mic with a condom during her coverage of Hurricane Ian.
In her Instagram stories, Kyla Galer confirmed that “it is what you think it is.”
“A lot of people are asking what is on my microphone. It is what you think it is. It’s a condom,” she began.
“It helps protect the gear. You can’t get these mics wet. There’s a lot of wind and a lot of rain, so we gotta do what we gotta do and that is put a condom on the microphone,” she added.
We gotta protect our gear at all costs🤣😬 https://t.co/ocnmJUtG2u

In a tweet, her colleague Jeff Butera showed a clear photo of the “waterproofed” microphone. “We practice safe hurricane reporting,” he wrote on Twitter.

Yes, it's a condom.
Nothing better to waterproof a microphone.
My Waterman Broadcasting colleague @kylagaler has been fielding lots of questions, haha.

Butera, however, noted that despite the light moment that made headlines on social media, their “focus is on the devastation” in their community. “It’s awful,” he told Yahoo Life.
According to NBC News, Hurricane Ian is “one of the strongest and costliest storms to ever hit the United States.” AP News reported that the death toll “grew to more than four dozen, with 47 deaths confirmed in Florida, four in North Carolina, and three in Cuba.”
