Everything we know about RPTV, the channel that replaced CNN Philippines
The website and social media accounts of CNN Philippines have officially been wiped out after operations were shut down on Jan. 31. But as the saying goes, life goes on. Now, a new channel has replaced the defunct television network operated by Nine Media Corporation.
After CNN Philippines quietly signed off after its final plug, the RPTV logo was flashed, marking the introduction of a new channel.
What is RPTV?
The free-to-air channel is a collaboration with TV5 and MediaQuest as content providers for the new channel. Like its forerunner, RPTV also offers stories on news and public affairs along with programs that cater to sports and entertainment followers.
The network was called RPN9 back when it was still owned by the government for the most part before it started broadcasting on the CNN Philippines brand on March 16, 2015.
The Presidential Communications Office currently holds a 20 percent minority stake in Radio Philippines Network, while Nine Media has a 34 percent ownership claim.
What are its programs?
RPTV will be airing live coverages and interviews on the Philippines Basketball Association games. The channel will also cover the Premier Volleyball League and Gilas Pilipinas games.
For its entertainment lineup, the local channel will start airing the daily noontime show EAT... Bulaga following its transfer to TV5 after a dispute with TAPE Inc. It will also show local comedy and action movies during the weekends.
Moreover, RPTV will keep its viewers informed on the latest happenings through a news and public service morning show led by broadcast journalist Ted Failon and radio host DJ Chacha, as well as Raffy Tulfo's Wanted sa Radyo program.
TV5 President and CEO Guido Zaballero highlighted that they aim to create a "comprehensive and engaging platform that caters to the diverse interests of every family member."
"We believe in the power of entertainment to bring people together, and RPTV is designed to be a one-stop destination for families seeking quality content," he added.
MediaQuest President and CEO Jane Basas meanwhile emphasized that they are set on making the new channel the "go-to destination for quality and diverse content."
Where is it available?
RPTV is available on Channel 9 Analog, Channel 19 DTT, Chanel 18.3 DTT, and over 300 cable and satellite providers nationwide. You can also stream its programs through the Cignal Play OTT App.
Rumors of a shutdown first came to light on Jan. 25 after Media Newser Philippines reported that the news channel and Nine Media Corporation have "mutually agreed not to continue with their licensing agreement due to significant financial losses," saying there was a "decline in ad revenue and increased operating costs."
In its recent financial statements, CNN Philippines reported a net loss of P239.7 million in 2022 and P231.4 million in 2021.
