Guard throws puppy from Quezon City mall's footbridge; establishment condemns act

A security guard from a popular mall in Quezon City allegedly threw a kid's puppy from a footbridge, leading to its death.

In a now-viral Facebook post dated July 11, netizen Janine Santos recalled witnessing how the guard in question from SM North EDSA was driving away a group of kids. One of the kids, Santos said, had a puppy.

When the kids won't go away, that's when things took a surprising turn.

"Ang ginawa tinapon nung guard ung aso mula footbridge," the post read. "Nakakaawa 'yung mga batang may ari dun sa aso!!!"

Santos said a man tried talking to the guard, only for the guard to respond with, "Wala akong pake."

She also recalled the crowd almost breaking into tears after witnessing the incident.

In a statement, SM City North EDSA said it called the attention of the security agency to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter.

"With extreme sadness, we sympathize with the group of youngsters regarding the incident that happened outside our mall today," it began.

The guard has also been dismissed and is no longer allowed to service any of their malls nationwide.

"As a pet-friendly establishment, we strongly condemn any acts that endanger or harm the lives of animals," said the establishment.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), meanwhile, on Facebook said it's filing a case against the guard to hold him accountable for the "horrific cruelty."

PAWS noted it received over 190 emails about the incident and has gotten in touch with witnesses. "Historically, PAWS has filed cases against those who have hurt animals that had no owners or guardians as long as there were witnesses to the cruel act who were willing to file an affidavit," it said.

The organization, however, asked the public to refrain from flooding its email with forwarded posts on social media so witnesses may send their draft affidavits in order to file the case.
