UP, UST drop a few spots in world university rankings, MIT remains top university in the world
The recently released 18th edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2022 features 1,300 universities around the world, with a 10 percent increase from last year’s number, making it QS’ largest rankings yet.
In the newest world rankings, the University of the Philippines (UP) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) dipped from their ranks last year, while the Ateneo de Manila University and the De La Salle University maintained their spots.
This year, UP ranked 399, a three-notch drop from last year’s 396. While UST fell in the 1,001-1,200 rank from last year’s 801-1,000.
Ateneo de Manila University remained in the 601-650 rank, and De La Salle University maintained its 801-1,000 rank.
This year’s rankings also saw 305 Asian schools on the list, with two Singaporean schools being the highest in the region—National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University Singapore, which ranked 11th and 12th worldwide.
Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, Malaysia has the most ranked schools this year with 22 universities, followed by Indonesia with 16. The Philippines has its “Big 4” universities ranked.
For 10 consecutive years, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States remained the top university in the world according to rankings.
MIT—which produced notable alumni such as Buzz Aldrin, the second person to walk the moon; former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan; and Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu—is joined in the Top 10 this year by universities mostly from the US and the UK.
The Top 10 universities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings 2022 are the following:

- University of Cambridge (United Kingdom)
- Harvard University (United States)
- California Institute of Technology (United States)
- Imperial College London (United Kingdom)
- ETH Zurich-Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Switzerland)
- University College London (United Kingdom)
- University of Chicago (United States)
According to QS, each institution has been assessed according to six key metrics:
- Academic Reputation (40 percent)
- Employer Reputation (10 percent)
- Faculty/Student Ratio (20 percent)
- Citations per faculty (20 percent)
- International Faculty Ratio (5 percent)
- International Student Ratio (5 percent)
The QS World University Rankings is an annual publication started in 2004 by Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education analyst.
