Universal Studios Hollywood tram crash injures 15 people

A tram accident at the Universal Studios Hollywood, a film studio and theme park in Los Angeles, injured 15 people on April 20, Saturday.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said units were dispatched to the park after 9 p.m. The patients sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios Hollywood confirmed the accident to Variety, saying they’re working to “support our guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident.”

In another statement, the spokesperson said they’re working closely with public agencies to review the incident.

“We have resumed Studio Tour operations with a modified route and are reinforcing our operational and safety protocols,” the spokesperson is quoted as saying.

The California Highway Patrol (CPH), which is leading the investigation, reported that while taking a left turn, the tram’s last car “collided with a metal guardrail on the right side of the roadway causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram.”

Though the investigation is ongoing, the CPH said alcohol and drugs aren’t considered to be a factor in the crash.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s trams are used for its World-Famous Studio Tour, an hour-long activity that takes visitors behind the scenes of the studios’ lot where renowned movies and television shows were filmed, including Back to the Future, Desperate Housewives, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Other attractions include King Kong 360 3-D and Jaws shark attack.

Universal Studios Hollywood is about to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
