A man poisoned his wife for months in an attempt to end her life so he could marry her daughter.

Citing authorities, multiple media outlets—including PEOPLE Magazine—reported that Alfred Ruf from Indiana has been sentenced to prison earlier this week after pleading guilty to aggravated battery, which "usually involves a physical act or contact with another person without that person's consent and with an intention to cause harm."

Lisa Bishop, his 51-year-old wife, dealt with "unexplained headaches, drowsiness, diarrhea, and more" in 2021 and later told police that Ruf was trying to poison her.

An investigation on the case started the following year, where Bishop tested positive for drugs like MDMA and cocaine, which she said she "didn't knowingly take."

The arrest affidavit showed that Ruf admitted to putting poison in Bishop's soft drinks for months so he could end up marrying her daughter. He also said that two other women, including Bishop's 31-year-old child, helped him carry out his plan. According to Ruf, it was Bishop's daughter who provided him with the poison to end her life.

Court documents showed that Ruf is set to serve four years in jail. He will also be on probation for five years. Whether Bishop's daughter has been charged for her alleged involvement in the crime remains unknown.
