Extension cord and power strips are allowed in carry-on bags
Extension cords and power strips are allowed in carry-on bags, the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) announced.
On May 16, the OTS took to social media to share the new policy which took effect on May 15.
The office said that the was put in place to address complaints received from passengers and that it is temporary while the OTS reviews the Prohibited Items List.
"OTS strives to improve its policies to provide balance between security and passenger convenience in line with Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista’s guidance to provide a comfortable, accessible, safe, sustainable, affordable, and seamless travel for all," it said in its statement.
Previously, extension cords were only allowed in checked-in luggage.
ICYDK, other items you can't bring in carry-on bags but are allowed in checked-in baggage include:
- Guns, firearms, and other items that discharge projectiles—subject to airline requirements and documentation
- Objects with sharp points or edges like axes, arrows and darts, box cutters, butterfly knives, canned products with easy open lids, cleavers, corkscrews, ice picks, knives, scissors, and razor blades
- Workers tools like crowbars, drills, hammers, nails, pliers, saws, screwdrivers, wrenches, nail guns, retractable tape measures (metal), etc.
- Blunt instruments like metal chains, billiard sticks, bowling/billiard balls, clubs, bats, dumbbells, fishing rods, ice skates, skateboards, tennis rackets, etc.
Meanwhile, items like batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes are only allowed in carry-on bags.
Explosives and incendiary devices like pyrotechnics, fuel, matches, lighters, gasoline, etc., and chemical substances like muriatic acid, vinegar, radioactive materials, paint, thinner, butane, fertilizer, bleach, and sulfur are not allowed in flights as per the OTS.
