Pope Francis has named Cardinal Jose Advincula of Capiz as the new archbishop of Manila on Thursday, March 25.

The appointment was made in Rome at 12 noon (7 p.m. Manila time).

Advincula was the archbishop of Capiz since 2011 and served as bishop of San Carlos for 10 years.

Advincula replaced Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who left the post in February 2020 to serve in the Vatican as prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Advincula, who is turning 69 on March 30, was born in Capiz’s Dumalag town and was ordained a priest for the archdiocese in 1976.

He was the spiritual director of the St. Pius X Seminary, where he was also professor and dean of education.

He studied Psychology at the De La Salle University, canon law at the University of Santo Tomas, and at the Angelicum in Rome, where he obtained a licentiate in canon law.

He has served in the seminaries of Vigan, Nueva Segovia, and in the regional seminary of Jaro.

He became the Rector of the St. Pius X Seminary of Capiz in 1995, and was also appointed to the administration of the archdiocese.

After being appointed as bishop of San Carlos in 2001, Pope Francis elevated him as cardinal in November, 2020.
