Catfisher from China dates a mother and her son in a $20,000 scam

A mother-and-son duo from China sued a man that they have been separately dating for nearly five years after he allegedly swindled over 140,000 yuan (P1,152,700) from them.

According to a report from the South China Morning Post, con artist Song allegedly scammed the mother and her son through WeChat.

Song previously met the mother, surnamed Jiang, while strolling through a street in 2018. Upon finding out that Jiang was single, the two decided to see their relationship progress by exchanging contact details and adding each other on WeChat.

Nearing the end of the same year, Song offered to introduce Jiang’s son, Li, to a potential female lover on WeChat. While Song claimed that he knew the person, it was soon alleged that Song pretended to be the woman by using another account on the social platform in order to start a relationship with Li.

After dating long enough to convince Jiang that Song was in love with her, the lawsuit detailed that the mother had given over 70,000 yuan (P575,660) to the catfisher after claiming that he needed help to pay a loan and provide salary for his farmers. Song had also insisted on helping Jiang open a fixed deposit account.

Alongside the hefty monetary request from Song, the alleged catfisher had also persuaded Li into handing out 60,000 yuan (P493,390) by using his fake account after it was claimed that he needed help to pay off his father’s medical treatment and the child of his friend’s medical bills.

Jiang and Li continued to date Song until he was reported to the police in January. He was reportedly being sued at the Huining County court in Gansu province of northwestern China where the verdict has yet to be announced.
