Pantone selects Very Peri as its 2022 Color of the Year, and ARMYs are thrilled
Pantone, a New-Jersey-based company considered as the global authority on color, has revealed its color for the year 2022: Very Peri.
Very Peri, or PANTONE 17-3938, is a “dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone.” Pantone said in a release on Dec. 9. “(It) blends the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red.”
The company said the brand-new color for 2022 displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.
Pantone Color Institute Vice President Laurie Pressman said creating a new color “reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place.”
“As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.”
Among the factors the color authority considered in selecting its 2022 Color of the Year are trends in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse, and rising artistic community in the digital space.
“As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways.” Pantone said. “Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we re-write our lives.”
One particular group received the news with much enthusiasm, namely ARMY, as the fanbase of the K-pop group BTS usually identify with the color purple, which is reminiscent of Very Peri. The color holds a special meaning for ARMY as in 2016, BTS' V said that the term "I Purple You," means "I will trust and love you for a long time."
Since then, the ARMY have been long using the color in showing their support for BTS.
Here are some of their reactions to Very Peri being the color of the year:

Last year, the company chose Ultimate Gray (PANTONE 17-5104) and Illuminating (PANTONE 13-0647) as its 2021 Color of the Year, a marriage of gray and yellow hues that “assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience” in light of the first pandemic year.
