Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu may face 10 years to life imprisonment following suspicions of rape
Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu might be sentenced to at least 10 years in jail or life imprisonment if he is proven guilty of multiple charges of rape.
This comes after Wu’s detainment by Chinese police on Saturday, July 31, over suspicions of rape, sexual assault, grooming, and predatory behavior towards minors. The allegations first surfaced on Chinese social media platform Weibo, when a woman named Du Meizhu accused Wu of sexually assaulting her when she was 17 years old.
According to Chinese state-owned media Global Times, Du accused Wu of getting her drunk until she passed out. She then found herself next to Wu upon waking up, and discovered that she had sex with him.
Du further revealed that Wu used various methods like music video castings and contracts to lure young women into sex. She also claimed that the pop star had a preference for women who were born after 2000.
Wu denied the allegations on his official Weibo account, where he stressed that “he would go to jail” on his own and “take all legal responsibility” if he “ever did something like this.”
Following Du’s accusations, a total of 24 women have also accused the Chinese-Canadian pop star of committing sexual assault.
If Wu is proven guilty, he may face at least 10 years in jail or life imprisonment, and will likely be deported after his sentence.
The pop star’s accounts on Weibo, video platform Douyin, and music platform NetEase Cloud Music have been removed following the accusations. Several major luxury brands, including Porsche and Bvlgari, have also cut ties with him.
Wu is a former member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group EXO. He left the group in 2014 due to contract disputes.
