BSP has launched a limited-edition ‘P125-piso’ coin in honor of Jose Rizal
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has launched a limited-edition “P125-piso” commemorative coin in honor of Dr. Jose Rizal as a “global Filipino hero” to mark his 125th death anniversary.
According to BSP, the commemorative coin is 34 millimeters in diameter and weighs 15 grams. It’s also made of nordic gold with a gold-plated finish and it features the portrait and signature of Rizal.
“The inscriptions 125 years and Martyrdom of Jose Rizal on its obverse side and also features the Rizal Monument, the BSP logo, the inscriptions 125 Piso and Republika ng Pilipinas on its reverse side,” BSP added.
The coin, which costs P1,000, is described as a tribute to Rizal’s life and legacy which “serve as inspiration for people from all walks of life.”
Orders for the commemorative coin, however, have already been closed due to high demand.
Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo became a driving force for patriots to protest for the Philippines’ freedom from Spanish rule.
The novelist and ophthalmologist was executed by a firing squad on Dec. 30, 1896, in Luneta Park (formerly known as Bagumbayan).
