Gays turn straight when drunk? Celebs, netizens slam and poke fun at PNP statement

“Kahit bakla yan, kapag nakainom ng alak, nagiging lalaki yan.” This was the statement of Makati Police Chief Colonel Harold Depositar, referring to the gay friends of flight attendant Christine Dacera, who were with her on the day she was found dead at a Makati hotel.

Depositar implied that the gay companions of Dacera could still be be suspects in what the police believed was a rape-slay case, regardless if they are gay.

The statement, which had no scientific claim, drew flak and raised more than a few eyebrows in social media.

Fashion designer Rajo Laurel in a tweet said that gays are gays even if they are drunk.

The advocacy group Bahaghari condemned the statement.

"Being LGBTQ+ is not a mask you wear or a behavior washed away by intoxication; it is a core part of one's being. When the PNP says 'lalake pa rin sila; may instinct yan,' they actually admit to their own predatory behaviors,” said Rey Salinas, Bahaghari’s spokesperson.

Babaylanes, Inc., the alumni LGBT organization of the University of the Philippines, tagged Depositar’s statement as ”misinformed, misleading, and dangerously malicious.”

‘Such hasty conclusion exposes the PNP’s lack of understanding and appreciation of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression (SOGIE),” the organization said.

“How can the PNP ensure due process when they obviously have these preconceived notions against gay people?”

Other celebrities also belied PNP’s claim based on their experience.

Comedian K Brosas said ithat n her experience, her gay friends wouldn’t even kiss her when drunk.

DJ Chacha said that her gay friends when drunk would transform into Beyonce, Mariah Carey, and even Sailormoon.

Twitter user @OhEmGil posted a video of gays dancing to show how gays are when drunk.

Twitter user @lanzalonso also posted a photo of him in a Darna costume in reaction to PNP’s statement.

Twitter user @estongocampo meanwhile posted a video of someone dancing and even trying out a headstand to show how gays are when drunk.

John Villanueva posted a TikTok video of him dancing that ended with the statement, “Walang on/off ang gender namin.”
