Ateneo shooting leaves at least three dead, two injured—police

A shooting incident at C5 Katipunan Avenue left at least three dead and two injured on Sunday, July 24. 

MMDA reported that it occurred at the Gate 3 of the Ateneo de Manila University around 2:55 p.m. 

The suspect, identified as Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol from Basilan, is now under police custody. He was captured along Aurora Boulevard "after a chase along Esteban Abada St.," Barangay Loyola Heights captain Don Hayes said.

Philstar.com reported that the shooter escaped to a nearby subdivision "by climbing a wall in front of the barangay hall. Shooter then rammed the village's gates in a getaway vehicle and drove to Aurora."

QCPD Director PBGen Remus Medina said Yumol had a "personal feud" with the former mayor of Basilan—one of the reported casualties in the shooting.

According to the Supreme Court Public Information Office, spokesperson Brian Hosaka said Chief Justice Gesmundo was expected to be the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony of the Ateneo Law School. 

“He was still in transit when the shooting happened and was advised to turn back. The Chief Justice is safe,” he added.

The Ateneo de Manila University announced the cancellation of the 2022 Commencement Exercises of the ALS on Twitter, adding that they are "continuing to work with the police and other authorities to deal with the incident."

ADMU has released an official statement on the matter. "There is no acceptable reason for violence," it read, assuring the community that the "campuses are safe, and security protocols are now being reviewed and strengthened further."

In a Facebook post, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. expressed his grief over the incident. "We mourn with the bereaved, the wounded, and those whose scars from this experience will run deep."

"We commit our law enforcement agencies to thoroughly and swiftly investigate these killings and bring all involved to justice," he said.
