The new life and loves of Dhyana Mitta

Published Aug 25, 2023 5:00 am

When I first encountered Faith, known more widely as Dhyana Mitta, it was in the dark hallways of a set design workroom in Cebu City. It was 2020, and we worked together for a TV series. During one of our weekends off, I heard her perform live for the first time when I went on assignment to cover the flagship store launch of a local skate shop. I thought she was tenacious, and being the only woman in the lineup, I was curious about her inner world—how she came to liberate herself from the constraints of being a woman in the hip-hop scene, a predominantly male-dominated field.

This encounter was many years ago, before the world morphed into something new altogether, and I forgot about my questions about existing in the male space. Now that I had the opportunity to reconnect with her, my questions have changed and her focus has, too. So here’s the Cebuana powerhouse with her new life and loves, and the top 3 things she’s most focused on right now.

“Just go for it! Unya nang pagmahay (Regrets come later on and even then, they’re just regrets),” says Dhyana.

YOUNG STAR: How are you? What’s new with you right now?

DHYANA MITTA: Everything is so different from 2019 when I first started music. My priorities changed. Now, I’m working towards getting a master’s in science while breastfeeding my child who’s almost a year old and is getting bigger and stronger every day. I’m also very engaged with my family now, being a wife to my husband and running our household. Pretty domesticated. My life has been complete.

Were you resistant at all to these changes in your life?

Not at all. Before, I used to dream of being a rapper onstage, but as I was on the path to marriage, I was able to let it go and learned to tend to my inner feminine and channel it. Now my number one priority is being there for my son and being a good wife. I know that music is far from what I’m doing right now, and it’s exciting to be a newbie at something.

For years, especially in the hip-hop scene, all I’ve been tending to is (my) masculine energy. At gigs where almost always I’m the only woman in the lineup, it’s necessary for the job, and to be honest no one ever mentions that. But now, channeling and tending to my feminine energy has been pretty satisfying. I love tapping into my womanhood!

How has this newfound mindset affected your songwriting or any kind of art that you create at all?

It has impacted the way I write. Nag sige na ko ug suwat when I got engaged (I’ve written songs when I got engaged), so now I actually have a couple of unreleased songs that turned out real different from what I usually put down on paper. There are notes of sensuous feminine energy in there.

To the people that come across this article, take this as a sign for you to just do it. Get that degree, get that job, get that goal. Don’t stop yourself from growing or elevating. Take a chance on yourself every day. Just go for it! Unya nang pagmahay. (Regrets come later on and even then, they’re just regrets.)

How do you feel about those songs you wrote? Are you going back to the studio to record them anytime soon?

Very empowering pero lahi pud. Very empowering, but different. It speaks a lot of vulnerability, which I’m proud to embrace as a woman. I’ll go back to the studio when the Universe aligns the schedule.

What’s one thing that hasn’t changed about you?

Oh, that I’m ever-changing, evolving, and always seeking growth. I take pride in my being a curious person, a seeker of knowledge, and even unlearning some of the old things that don’t fit in my life now anymore.

And also my resilience. I’m sure I can always adapt to any given situation. As much as I want to strive hard, I’m also already pretty content with everything. That’s why I think I’m never attached to the dream. Just working towards it.

How do you cultivate and nourish your soul?

All right, here’s where I’ll give you a list. First, meditation. I always make sure that I set aside time to meditate every day, even as I’m lying down in bed before bedtime. Second, self-awareness. It has taught me the value of looking beyond what I say, do, think and consume. That’s one attribute I’m mastering: I always have to be extra wary about my space, the things I consume… I don’t even scroll for hours on social media anymore!

Third, and in relation to that, consuming the right things. There should be value in the things you put into your brain and your space. Lastly, doing everything with love. All reasoning for my objectives has to be love. Nothing out of spite, anger, or ill-mindedness. When you do things out of love, you can never go wrong.
