Woman gets disinvited from best friend's wedding after repeatedly joking that the groom was into her first
A woman got disinvited from her best friend's wedding after repeatedly making jokes about how the bride's man was "into her" and dated her first.
The 26-year-old bride shared what happened in a subreddit Am I An As--- as she sought advice on whether she made the right choice of disinviting her best friend named Izzy after the latter made multiple inappropriate jokes ahead of her wedding.
Detailing the dilemma, the bride shared Izzy has been part of her life since she was born. While they spent a few years apart, they managed to reconnect again and become the best friends.
She went on to share how Izzy dated her current fiancé, Jake, but she previously told him "wasn't interested in anything serious" at the time. The bride initially didn’t know about Jake back then since she only remembered men that Izzy got into a serious relationship with.
"Even though I was her best friend, I didn't really know Jake because she used to get asked out a lot, but only a few turned serious. So, I knew about her boyfriends, but not necessarily her dates," the anonymous bride wrote in the Reddit post.
Almost a year later, she decided to live with Izzy. It was also around the time she met Jake, and they quickly became good friends.
"I used to talk about him to Izzy a lot, but it's when I showed her his picture that she recognized him and told me about her dates with him," she recalled.
"Friendships were more important to me [than] any guy back then so I asked her if it was okay to date him because I liked him a lot. She said she had no problem and joked about it ever turning into a relationship, which I took as a joke," she added.
The bride detailed how she and Jake became serious in no time and decided to move in together, making her and Izzy "lose touch a bit." It was not much of a problem, she said, until they got engaged.
“After I got engaged, she became very weird,” she wrote, adding that Izzy was "very shocked" and "would not believe it." Izzy also allegedly made comments that the bride is "too young" to get married. Despite this, the bride still asked her to be one of her maids of honor along with her sister.
Things got much more complicated when she announced their engagement on Instagram. While their friends sent congratulatory messages in the reposts and comments section, Izzy made another "joke" by saying, “[Y]ou better mention me in your vows because he was into me first haha."
“Jake felt very uncomfortable, and so did I but I defended her saying that, 'It's just Izzy, she jokes around a lot.' But I still let her know that it was a bit uncomfortable, and she said that she was just joking,” the bride shared.
Despite pointing out that jokes were making them uncomfortable, the bride shared that Izzy continued telling the same joke to her friends and family during their dinner party.
“That day, Izzy just kept telling all the friends and family gathered that Jake dated her first, she let me have him, stuff like that. Even after telling her it was not okay, she joked around,” she said.
“Later I told her that she was crossing my boundaries and that it was not okay, to which she said I was overreacting,” she added, sharing that it was the time she decided to disinvite Izzy to her wedding.
In the same post, the bride said she's been "overthinking a lot," especially now that people who know them are taking sides. She's also worried that she might have put at end to their lifelong friendship.
The post has garnered more than 3,500 upvotes and over 500 comments as of writing, with most users supporting the bride’s decision to disinvite her best friend following the latter's actions.
“NTA (Not the as---). I think that she loses any right to claim it was ‘just a joke’ when you've expressed that it makes you uncomfortable and asked her to stop. You have every right to enforce your boundaries, even if that means ending a long friendship,” a Reddit user commented.
“I don't think a 'friend' would go around telling everyone that it's cool for you to have her leftovers which is essentially what she's doing. You might want to point that out to the naysayers,” another one said.
