Get to know Sarah McBride—the first openly transgender state senator in the United States
Sarah McBride beat Republican candidate Steve Washington at the State Senate race in Delaware, making her the first openly transgender state senator in the United States.
She will replace Senator Harris McDowell, who is set for retirement.
The Democrat, who was endorsed by incumbent Democrat Harris McDowell, expressed her utmost gratitude to her supporters in a series of tweets.

“As Delaware continues to face the Covid crisis, it’s time to get to work to invest in the policies that will make a difference for working families,” she added.
According to USA Today, she has previously said that she doesn’t “intend on serving as a transgender state senator. I intend on serving as a senator who happens to be transgender.”

McBride serves as the national press secretary of the Human Rights Campaign. The organization has celebrated her win in a statement, saying, “Tonight, Sarah made history not just for herself but for the entire community. She gives a voice to the marginalized as a representative and an advocate.” HRC president Alphonso David added, “The victory, the first of what I expect to be many in her career, shows that any person can achieve their dream, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation.”
