Heart Evangelista reflects on being a mother to Chiz Escudero's children, heartbreak from past miscarriages
Heart Evangelista got real when she shared a personal and emotional chapter of her life—the moment she lost her babies. She also opened up about being a stepmother to husband Sen. Chiz Escudero's children.
In the latest episode of her show, Heart World, the actress-turned-style icon talked about motherhood.
She had reservations about being a mother until she married Chiz and when she got pregnant with twins.
"Yung mommy ko kasi laging sinasabi na 'No, ‘wag ka muna mag-aanak.' [...] And so I would be afraid to have a child when I was young kasi I was afraid of the responsibilities. And then when I really wanted to have a child, […] it only took me two months, and I was pregnant right away. I had twins. In fact, nagulat pa nga ako kasi may lahi kaming kambal, and si Chiz meron din. So nagulat ako na first try ko after two months, kambal agad," she said.
Heart went on about the complications she experienced during her pregnancy.
"But then after two months, nakita na agad dun na that [the] other baby was slowly disappearing. So it's called vanishing twin syndrome. So the vanishing twin syndrome is a complicated case because mga 50% to 60%, ang sabi sa 'kin, 'yung matitirang bata will be a very special child kasi ganon daw 'yung usual case. [...] And at that time, I didn’t really care basta aalagaan ko ‘yung bata. And then when [I am] four months into the pregnancy, I was getting the ultrasound, and there was no heartbeat."
While it taught her to be stronger, the socialite admitted that the incident was traumatizing. It made her not want to get pregnant again.
Trying again
While Heart said that it took time for her to recover, she later realized that she wanted to get pregnant again. However, she had another miscarriage.
"I did a test and nalaman ko, there's nothing wrong with me, and in fairness nothing wrong with Chiz. But basically my body, even if I was in my 30s parang yung production ng eggs ko para na akong nasa late 40s. So kaunti nalang yung natitirang eggs sakin. So naka-harvest kami ng 4 eggs and only two were good," she said.
"[I] got a surrogate mother and she was pregnant and she was carrying my baby girl and then after not a very long time, nawala yung baby girl."
After a few months, they tried again. Heart had a boy, but after one week, the baby died.
"Masakit kasi iniisip ko, boy and girl [twins] last ko girl na 'yun and then finally just a few months ago, we decided to take a chance to try the boy, my last remaining embryo and nabuo siya, mayroon na siyang heartbeat but after one week, ayun di rin siya nag-work."
Those incidents made Heart question her fertility.
A blessing in disguise
Despite the challenges she faced, Heart shared that she felt blessed with Chiz's fraternal twins, Quino and Chesi.
"Binigyan [ni Lord] ako nung dalawa (Quino and Chesi) na alam kong mayroon akong, hindi ko sinasabe na aalagaan nila ako, or gusto kong alagaan nila ako. Gusto ko lang mayroon akong makakakwentuhan 'pag matanda na ako, ma-share ko lang 'yung good experiences ko, 'yung mga hardships ko, 'yung mag lessons ko, para 'di masasayang. That's all I kinda wanted."
Quino and Chesi are Chiz's kids with singer and stage actress Christine Elizabeth Flores.
Heart and Chiz have been married since 2015. Earlier in the year, they renewed their vows in Balesin Island, the same place where they exchanged I do's.
