LOOK: Outrageous, funny, and fun celebrity Valentine's Day surprises

Valentine’s Day is always a good excuse to treat your loved ones and give them a pleasant surprise or two.

Many opted to go simple yet still sweet this year, considering how the pandemic has presumably limited the ways we can celebrate the occasion. But a few chose to go big and over-the-top in expressing their love this year, resorting to more creative (and "extra") ways to enjoy Valentine's Day.

Here are some of the extreme ways people celebrated Valentine’s Day, as seen on social media:

A room full of balloons

Michelle Güjer didn’t have to say “sana all” yesterday after her partner Benedict Fernandez III, a former basketball player, gave her a grand gift on Valentine’s Day: a bedroom filled with red balloons and a bed full of petals. Based on the photos you almost couldn’t see the bedroom’s floor and ceiling because of the insane amount of balloons in the room. The surprise also included a bouquet of flowers and a box full of burgers.

Michelle took to Instagram to share her boyfriend’s surprise. “Hi! I have a crazy boyfriend, his name is Ben. And he has been this crazy sweet since 2016,” she wrote in the post’s caption.

“I love making her heart melt,” Ben said in his Instagram post about his surprise.

Their Valentine’s Day celebration turned viral on the following day, although comments about Ben's surprise garnered mixed responses from netizens. Many expressed their admiration for Ben’s “crazy” but romantic gesture of love, while others worried about the waste created by the surprise.

A 'fly out of town' trip

Kim Chiu thought she and her boyfriend Xian Lim will go on a simple out of town trip to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Instead, they went on a “fly out of town” trip—onboard a seaplane to Coron, Palawan with her loved ones. “I woke up to a beautiful surprise today! This guy has a lot of surprises in his pocket,” Kim said in an Instagram post.

“Sabi niya out of town tayo, then suddenly he sent a hangar address kala ko saang out of town, FLY out of town pala! Di ready outfits ko,” she quipped.

A huge bouquet of flowers

Heart Evangelista celebrated her birthday on Valentine’s Day. It looks like the actress decided to celebrate both occasions in a somewhat low-key manner with her husband, Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero, based on her posts on Instagram Story. What’s attention-grabbing is the giant bouquet of flowers Heart received on her special day. What is one going to do with this human-size bouquet of flowers, no one knows. But it seems Heart is very pleased to have received it.

Heart and Chiz are also celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary today, Feb. 15. “Six years and a lifetime more to go with us at each other's side. I wouldn't have it any other way. Thankful for all the big and small moments we've had, and everything else in between! Happy Anniversary, mon amour,” Heart said in an Instagram post.

If you can't love yourself...

…then how are you gonna love somebody else, says drag queen and gay icon RuPaul Charles. Perhaps this is the mantra Maris Racal, who says she is single, took to heart this Valentine’s Day. The actress gave herself a “surprise” yesterday: a room filled with balloons and a bed with rose petals that spelled out “I (heart sign) Me.” “Thank you to myself for surprising myself,” Maris said on Instagram.

“I mean ang ganda ko. Ang ganda mo. Ang ganda nating lahat,” she said on Twitter.

Hollywood stars stayed at home on Valentine’s Day, though that doesn’t mean they didn’t celebrate the occasion. Jennifer Lopez, for instance, received a huge bouquet of flowers. She said February is a special month for her and fiancé Alex Rodriguez as they celebrate their anniversary month.

“We met again for the first time on February 1st... the first time we went out was two days later and since then there hasn’t been a day we haven’t been together or spoken... you keep me laughing...I love your wickedly funny sense of humor... and how you always try to make every room you enter a more joyful one... I love you and all you do for me and with me....you are my funny valentine,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
