Shawmila no more: Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello break up after two years

“We will continue to be best of friends,” the couple said.

Pop stars Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello released a joint statement on Wednesday, Nov. 17 (Thursday, Nov. 18 Philippine time) that they are calling it quits after more than two years into their romantic relationship.

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the couple wrote on their respective Instagram Stories.

“We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best of friends. So we appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

The announcement shocked Shawmila fans as the couple seemed inseparable since they started dating in 2019. Mendes even quarantined with Cabello in the height of the pandemic in 2020.

During this year’s Halloween, Cabello and Mendes posted on their Instagram accounts lovey-dovey photos and videos, where they are garbed in Dia de los Muertos-inspired costumes.

Cabello and Mendes also recently made their MET Gala debut, where they appeared affectionate and shared a bit of PDA while posing for the cameras.

Just in July, they celebrated their second anniversary with a Caribbean getaway, posting on their social media accounts steamy photos of their vacation. “Happy anniversary Kuko ❤️ here’s to more joy, more friendship, and more love,” Cabello wrote on Instagram.

“Happy 2 years, my baby,” said Mendes.

Prior to the start of their relationship, the Cinderella star and Summer of Love singer had been friends since 2014.

“She’s been one of my best friends since I was 15 years old,” Mendes told Entertainment Tonight in December 2020, where he also opened up on why he and Cabello were not in a rush to be engaged. “I know we are really young so I don't want to jump, like, insanely fast, but I think when you find your person, you feel and you know that you have found your person.”

Cabello, 24, and Mendes, 23, started dating in July 2019 following the drop of their steamy hit collab, Señorita.

After months of letting fans guess the status of their relationship, they confirmed their romance in an Instagram video that went viral where they slammed trolls by making out with sloppy kisses.

In an interview with The Morning Mash Up on Sirius XM in August, Mendes shared that he and Cabello have “the worst little arguments” but overcome them.

Meanwhile, Cabello said in Glamour’s October 2021 issue that she and Mendes are going to therapy separately to work on their mental health. Though they haven't done a couple's therapy, Cabello said she was open to it.

“For better, for worse, we’re very transparent with each other. I think that’s why we can trust each other so much, because it’s a very 3D human relationship,” Cabello said.

As of this writing, couple photos of Cabello and Mendes are still up on their social media accounts.
