A number of local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines have already signed deals in securing COVID-19 vaccines for its residents.

Just last week, a list of LGUs announced that they have already allotted a budget and are working on getting vaccines to be used for the inoculation for their residents.

Now, another COVID-19 milestone is happening as LGUs may be able to start mass vaccination soon.

On Jan. 5, the Quezon City Council gave the "green light" for the local government to purchase COVID-19 vaccines. Quezon City, which has the largest population among the cities/municipalities in the Philippines, has reached an agreement with AstraZeneca for the advance purchase of 750,000 doses.

“With the council resolution, we will soon finalize the tripartite partnership and begin the process of prioritizing our most vulnerable citizens,” Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

In another statement, Joseph Juico, co-chair of Quezon City Task Force on COVID-19 told ANC that they "can't [just] rely on one [vaccine]." "We've been talking to a number [of pharmaceutical companies] already," he said.

The city has allotted an initial P1 billion in its 2021 budget to purchase vaccines and supplies needed for the inoculation. They have also launched their new QCitizen ID, which will help the QC government to determine who will be on the vaccination priority list.
