'Ang dami kong hindi nagawa sa career ko': Liza Soberano explains how love team with Enrique Gil was limiting
Liza Soberano, half of the tandem LizQuen with Enrique Gil, has gone on the record with her real opinion of love teams.
"At the time when I was in a love team, hindi ko naisip na problema siya," Soberano said during the March 5 vlog of Lie Detector on Bea Alonzo's vlog.
This was in response to a question by Bea if she thought her career opportunities were limited because she was confined to a love team.
Soberano recalled losing a project she really wanted because something else was slated for LizQuen.
"It wasn't 'til later that I realized, oh my God, ang dami kong hindi nagawa sa career ko. And that's why everybody, I think, takes for granted my talent or acting capabilities because they've only seen me in a love team," Liza said.
Asked by Bea if she ever felt pressured that LizQuen would always be compared to its contemporaries, love teams KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla) and JaDine (James Reid and Nadine Lustre), she confirmed yes.
"It became like a competition of who could make more hits I guess especially with movies. I don't see it as a healthy competition when money is involved," Liza explained.
On her real score with James Reid
Bea also mentioned to Liza her appearances with James, asking her if she ever had a thing with him.
"No," Liza answered, "Why did I feel nervous though?" She then looked to the lie detector specialist, who affirmed she was telling the truth.
She said questions like that made her nervous as people "already the assumed the worst" about her since she hasn't been "posting anything about Quen."
Asked by Bea why that is, Liza simply replied that she's trying to stay away from the whole love team concept.
"To be honest, love teams are a phenomenon only created in the Philippines, only existing in the Philippines. And to box a woman like that is so dangerous actually for their mental health and also for their growth, not just as a professional but as an individual. So I stay away from that."
The LizQuen tandem debuted in the teleserye Forevermore in 2014. Though Liza and Enrique will celebrate their ninth anniversary this year, they only revealed their relatively private relationship in February 2019. Liza first admitted publicly on Vice Ganda's TV show Gandang Gabi Vice that they have been together since 2014.
Liza officially joined James Reid's record label and management agency Careless in June 2022.
