LOOK: Chelsea Manalo showcases Christianity, Islam history in PH with Miss Universe 2024 national costume
Chelsea Manalo gave a history lesson on religion with her national costume, which depicted the roots of Christianity and Islam in the Philippines, at the Miss Universe 2024 preliminary competition.
The beauty queen walked the runway at Mexico City on Nov. 17 donning a detailed gold and blue gown by Manny Halasan.
"This national costume is a symbolism of the far and profound history and relationship between the Philippines and Mexico," she shared on Instagram. "It reflects the shared deep devotion of both countries to religion. It depicts the colorful introduction of Christianization and Islam in the Philippines."
Taking inspiration from Muslim Filipinos, the gown used traditional fabric of the Inaul from the Province of Sultan Kudarat and was adorned with Tongkaling bells from Mindanao, which were believed to bring protection and blessings to the wearer.
"The rich culture and religious belief of the Muslims are depicted by the majestic and intricate colors and fabric of the Inaul and the decorative forms and patterns of Islamic art," Manalo said.
The Pinay beauty's gown also included elements from her hometown of Bulacan as it showcased Puni, or art decorations made from coconut fronds.
Meanwhile, her headpiece featured the Galleon trade, which brought trade and religion to the Philippines. On her blue train is the image of Our Lady of Antipolo or Our Lady of Good Voyage, which was brought to the country from Mexico during the 16th Century.
"Faith can navigate us through life. No matter what religion we believe in. If we pray for something, devote and give our faith and work for it, in God’s perfect time everything is possible. Despite all the hardships, chaos, roadblocks and redirection that we go through, believe that there is hope and Divine guidance from a Higher Being," the Pinay beauty queen wrote.
