Pia Wurtzbach wears Filipino pieces for a ‘Vogue Italia’ fashion editorial
Pia Wurtzbach and an all-Filipino creative team landed an enditorial in Vogue Italia, giving readers a taste of reimagined versions of Filipino fashion.
The beauty queen shared photos from her photo shoot wearing creations by local fashion designers Victor, Christine Tiu, Ron Aguro, and Thian Rodriguez that also put the spotlight on the weavers from Lih'han Di Immipugo of Kiangan, Ifugao.
"This is a look at our culture into the future: of what could have been, and what it could still be," Wurtzbach wrote on her caption, explaining the theme of the editorial: "Indigenous Futurism."
According to Vogue Italia, the editorial—which was photographed by MJ Suayan and styled by Victor Baguilat Jr.—was inspired by Afrofuturism as seen in the 2018 Marvel film, Black Panther, and it gives its own take on modernized pre-colonial fashion.
"These photographs collect instances of the movement trying to imagine a future where indigenous perspectives are highly visible in the global fashion industry," the article reads.
Wurtzbach added that there is still "much to see and learn" from Filipino culture. "Everything is intertwined and in fashion, it’s inspiring when different creatives come together—from weavers to designers to artists to photographers. New stories arise from each concept piece, each photo output," she said.
She also expressed her pride in wearing her "country's stories as pieces of art" and wishes every Pinoy does the same and inspire them to preserve cultures.
"I hope this doesn’t end with us just feeling inspired. It’s a start though. I hope we will always support each other’s artistry and creativity. I hope we can learn to preserve and continue traditions so we can weave them into our future," she said.
