WATCH: The Simpsons in Balenciaga make their runway debut at Paris Fashion Week
Who says the Springfield mainstays cannot go high fashion?
For its Summer ’22 show at the highly anticipated Paris Fashion Week (PFW), Balenciaga teamed with the creators of the beloved TV show, The Simpsons, to showcase its pieces through a 10-minute clip that premiered during the event.
The Spanish fashion luxury house’s presentation consisted of two parts. First, a photo call on the red carpet with the who’s who in fashion, models and celebrities including Cardi B, Lewis Hamilton and Elliot Page; and The Simpsons | Balenciaga movie premiere.
After the photo call, guests were treated to the bespoke 10-minute episode of The Simpsons where Homer, upon learning that Marge’s dream is to wear a Balenciaga dress, e-mails the fashion house to loan him a dress for Marge’s birthday on Oct. 2 (also the date of the brand’s show at PFW).
From there, a series of events transpires—Balencia creative director Demna Gavisalia and his team boarding a private plane and jetting off to the “style-deprived” Springfield, and invites the whole town, baring them his plans to show the world his pieces with “real people” to model them in Paris. (Gavisalia is said to be a huge fan of The Simpsons and working with the show creator Matt Groening and his team was a dream collaboration.)
Then off to the fashion capital of the world they go.
Popular characters from the show strut their stuff on the runway, wearing parts of the Balenciaga collection, including Chief Clancy Wiggum in an all-black garb with a French baguette detail to replace his truncheon; grouchy pub landlord Moe Szyslak in an oversized camel coat; Waylon Smithers in a red dress; Marge’s sisters Patty and Selma Bouvier, twins Sherri and Terry, even Julio and Skinner’s mother.
Of course, the Simpsons are the stars of the show, starting off with Bart, who glides the runway on a decked skateboard wearing a white T-shirt tucked in his jeans with leather details.
While Lisa and Maggie go “twinning” in their red long-sleeved dress.
Homer waiss loving the attention as he walks down the runway wearing an oversized red parka emblazoned with “Balenciaga.”
The piece de resistance is Marge's floor-length golden dress with a massive bow on the back. She receives a standing ovation from the guests, including THE Anna Wintour, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.
The evening ends on a cruise on the River Seine amid a spectacular fireworks display, which Marge says is “the most amazing birthday any woman has ever had.”
According to the luxury fashion house, the collaboration “is the latest in a progression of activations that push certain boundaries set up between fashion and other forms of entertainment, culture and technology, shifting the brand away from an easily definable category.”
