Look: Filipina designer stuns in '31 days of Halloween makeup challenge'
Halloween will definitely be different this year because of the pandemic. Since there will be no parties and trick-or-treating where one can dress up for, experts say that the celebrations will head on to social media where the Halloween-loving crowd will unleash their costumes and makeup looks.
Even before Oct. 31 arrives, fashion designer Happy Andrada is already ahead of the game with her take on the yearly “31 days of Halloween makeup challenge.” She showcases her artistry in a fun and playful way by using makeup to celebrate her favorite time of the year.
Andrada is known for her unique, complex detailing and masterful use of fabric and groundbreaking style. She has won several fashion awards locally and internationally, and has shown her pieces on global runways including the London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Amsterdam.
“Since I was a kid, I already love Halloween. We used to do our own makeup and costumes for trick-or-treating. I remember teasing our hair and putting powder with water on our faces,” Andrada shares with PhilSTAR L!fe.
She started the project as the community quarantines imposed in the country has given her more time to practice her skills as a makeup artist. Andrada studied professional makeup artistry at The London School of Beauty and Makeup apart from finishing fashion courses at the Central Saint Martins in London and the London College of Fashion.
At the start of October, Andrada posted on her Facebook page her first look, the “Queen of Hearts.” And from there, she would religiously post a new character every day. Among her obra maestra: Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Hocus Pocus’ Winnie Sanderson, a zombie, an alien, and Andy Wharhol-inspired portrait—all to complete the 31-day makeup challenge leading to Halloween.
Andrada explains that to create a look, she usually takes an hour—involving a tedious process of putting makeup and hairstyling, getting in the costume, and finally getting the shot. “I chose the characters that I really like and have meaning to me. I love styling the looks and putting them together, it’s really fun.”
In contrast, she takes a few minutes to remove all the makeup (she uses different brands like Mehron, Illamasqua, Norvina, Kryolan, SUVA, Urban Decay and MAC). Yet she's quick to note that even when using a good primer, some pigments stay in the face for days!
The fun-loving designer says she loves working on all the characters she featured. Her favorite, so far, she says, is Cruella De Vil, that wealthy, fashion-obsessed villain from Disney’s animated film 101 Dalmatians.
Andrada believes that her talents both as a fashion designer and an artist go hand in hand when showcasing her artistry, as seen in her Halloween makeup challenge and her recently released collections of limited edition loungewear inspired by Philippine street scene, and fashionable PPE.
With Halloween less than two weeks away, what could be Andrada’s finale look? In any case, click here for more of Andrada's 31 days of Halloween makeup creations!
