Crop tops have long been part of men's fashion, and more Gen Z males are rocking them in style.
Take Filipino ‘Golden Boy’ Carlos Yulo, who went viral on Sept. 29 for sporting a fitted crop top while on his South Korea trip.
The double gold-winning Olympian donned his blue cropped Adidas tee with light-wash denim jeans and black platform boots. His outfit earned him praise on social media.
"Gold medal fit," Adidas Philippines wrote in the comments.
"Winning the Olympics and now, breaking toxic masculinity and cultural codes of dressing up. Carlos, you're [golden]!" added one user.
"Gayahin ko nga tong outfit na to!! linisin ko lang pusod ko wait," quipped internet personality David Guison.
Before entering pop culture, crop tops were a symbol of masculinity, as football players have worn the piece since the 80s. Some reports say the clothing item was popular among men even earlier in the 70s as Sylvester Stallone wore it in the early Rocky films.
Eventually, Hollywood actors began to wear the piece in TV shows and on the big screen, like Johnny Depp in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990). Fast forward to 2024, Gambit is portrayed wearing a cropped pink tee in X-Men '97.
Despite getting backlash from some fans online, others praised the revamped look of Gambit as he was wearing period-accurate fashion, given that the series took place in the 1990s when the trend continued to be popular.
After falling from the trend list, the piece is making its way again inside the male closet. Here's a look at some local and global male celebrities rocking the piece.

The Pamilya Sagrado star is often seen trying out different styles and looks and he's been wearing crop tops since November 2023.

In 2022, Casiño posted a photo of him wearing a cropped black two-piece suit on Instagram.
He wrote, “Let’s normalize men wearing crop tops again” in the caption.
Jhong Hilario
It’s Showtime host Jhong Hilario has worn crop top pieces a few times in the show.
"Kuys Jhong" first started wearing the piece last year on the show and received mixed reactions from people on the internet.
Darren Espanto
The Kapamilya singer and host has recently been sporting crop top looks on social media and It’s Showtime
In a TikTok video with co-host Bella Padilla, he wore a gray crop shirt with prints while dancing to Charli XCX's Apple.
Harry Styles
When the One Direction member released the music video for his song Watermelon Sugar in 2020, he showcased retro looks, including a long-sleeved crop top.
The piece has been a staple for the British singer-songwriter’s fits, especially in his Love On Tour costumes.

Dubbed the “King of crop tops,” EXO's Kai has mastered the look in many ways during photoshoots and concert outfits.
Conan Gray
In a 2019 tweet, Conan Gray took to X to call for boys to wear a crop top: "CROP THE TOP, BOYS!"
