A basic guide to creating men’s skincare routine

Published Jun 15, 2021 9:02 pm

Taking care of men's skin should not be complicated—but we don't mean just using soap and water, we mean actual steps and beauty products that will make your skin better.

According to dermatologist Meg Sison, M.D., females are found to have more hydrated skin compared to males. "Men have larger pore size and an excessive amount of sebum especially on the forehead. Pigmentation, transepidermal warer loss, and skin thickness are also higher in men but skin pH is higher in women," she adds.

Dr. Gina Santiago Eubanas also said the same thing, adding that men have generally thicker skin than women. She did note, however, that like women, men too have different skin types. "Those with sensitive skin are prone to burn and stinging from harsh products, dry skin that tend to flake and itch, oily skin that are generally greasy and those with combination skin."

When it comes to skincare, one size doesn't fit all—our skins are different and it may react differently, too.

"There is no best product for all. Always observe for signs of irritation, that which doesn’t occur when you are using other brands or products," Dr. Eubanas says.

But when creating a routine, Dr. Sison says not to complicate things. "A simple but effective routine works best since they will be able to do it more consistently," she said. "They should also take into consideration their skin type, skin concern, and budget when choosing skincare products. When in doubt, a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist is recommended so that they can be guided," Sison added.

"Every skincare product should have a purpose in one's skincare routine," says Dr. Sison.

If you're intimidated by what you see online, don't worry, you only need the basics. Once you learn more about skincare and what your skin needs, that's when you can add more steps. Dr. Sison advices to start with the essentials: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. "If they have other skin concerns like acne or hyperpigmentation, it's best to consult a board-certified dermatologist for an individualized treatment," she adds.

Below, check out the simple men's skincare routine you can start with.

Cleanse

Most men only wash their face with water, while some use body soap—yikes! Washing the face twice a day, in the morning and evening, is an important step to get rid of dirt, oil, and residue that may build up and cause irritations or clog pores. So, Dr. Eubanas says to "always keep your face clean."

You can start by using a hydrating, non-comedogenic cleanser like the Hada Labo Premium Whitening Face Wash, which has moringa seed oil and hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture.

If you have acne-prone skin, look for cleansers with ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and glycolic acid, "but always have the discernment to realize if it's not working or making it worse. Seek the help of a certified dermatologist when that is the case," Dr. Eubanas says.

She adds that for those who have maintenance medication for pimples or acne, you should make sure the face is clean "so that the creams and solutions are better absorbed."

Moisturize

When skin is dry and irritated, it can lead to skin problems like acne, redness, flaking, and wrinkles, and you don't want that to happen, don't you? Regular hydrationwill protect your skin against signs of aging and also balance your oil production.

If you're afraid of feeling too greasy, the trick is to pick a moisturizer that suits your needs. First, there are the humectants, which usually contain moisture-drawing ingredients and are lightweight in consistency (gel types) and easy to absorb. These are suitable for all skin types, especially oily skin. And then there are emollients or lotion-like formulas. They contain lipids and oils to even out the skin texture and repair the skin barrier. These are good for normal, dry to combination skin types. And finally, the occlusives or moisture sealers. For those with dry, dehydrated skin, the thicker, the better because that way, it locks in moisture.

Try the Rich Hydrating Night Cream with Hyaluronic Acid from Cetaphil. Its main ingredient, hyaluronic acid, is good for boosting moisture and keeping skin soft and supple.

    Protect

Now this is something that most people tend to forget: sunblock. Yes, you need sunscreen indoors. Yes, you need to wear it even if it's gloomy outside. And yes, you need to reapply.

Look for a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30+, says Dr. Sison. For on-the-go dads, we suggest you try this Shiseido Clear Suncare Stick SPF 50+. Not only is it super handy, but it's easy to apply and does not feel sticky at all.
