Eat my ‘short:’ Stunning celebs in their short & chic hairstyles
There are countless reasons why women go for shorter hairstyles—to change their look, to make a statement, to symbolically “let go of the past,” or to just feel cool for the summer.
Getting a shorter hairstyle, especially the short pixies or even buzz cuts, needs commitment; the same amount of commitment you need when you once and for all decide to jump from a Cessna to skydive—there’s no turning back.
When a woman gets a drastic short ‘do, it is often equated to her going through something, usually a rough patch, “may pinagdadaanan” most people would say. There are also instances when one gets teased, “gupit pogi” or worse, “mukhang lalaki.”
TV host Iya Villania recently experienced exactly this when she overheard two security guards at a mall talking about her on their handheld radio, saying “mukha siyang lalaki."
Iya didn’t make a fuss about it and instead posted it on her Instagram stories. She made light of the situation and posted her photo where she sports a pixie cut posing a question to her followers, “Pogi ba?”
When a woman sports a shorter hairstyle, she exudes confidence that allows her to embrace herself fully as change in her life is about to come, and no amount of teasing or insensitive remarks will stop her from doing so.
Let’s take a look at these celebrities who rocked the short ‘do. Their hairstyles (past and present) may inspire you to have yours snipped, too!
Iya Villania-Arellano
It was in November 2020 when Iya Villania wowed her fans with her hair transformation—from her long tresses, to the super short pixie cut, her shortest ever.
She posted her new 'do on social media and it gained positive reactions from her fans and celebrity friends. It was the comment of her husband, Drew Arellano, that took the cake. “Well, I guess she wants another baby. #rawr,” Drew commented on Iya’s post in jest.
Iya, a mom of three, trusts renowned hairstylist Alex Carbonell for hair matters.
In a recent Instagram post, Iya urged those who have always dreamed of rocking a shorter ‘do, now is the right time to do so.
“If you’ve been wanting to try short hair but afraid of looking like a boy, just do it! It feels great and no matter what, you’re gonna find a way to make it work anyway!”
Sarah Geronimo
Sarah Geronimo used to sport long, straight locks, styled as needed for her concerts, TV appearances and music videos.
So when she had her hair cut to a chic bob in 2014, media was in a frenzy not only because of her new hairstyle but questions also arose whether having a new hairstyle was a sign of rebellion by the “Pop Princess” from her parents, whom she had misunderstandings with at the time.
Sarah has kept her hair in bobs for a time until June 2021 when she surprised everyone with her shortest hair yet. Her new hairstyle received all praises from friends in show business and the Popsters, her loyal fans.
Celeste Tuviera, the singer’s hairstylist, told PhilSTAR Life that Sarah had been thinking about getting a shorter ‘do and was “giddy like a kid at a candy store” when the new look worked very well on her.
KZ Tandingan
For the past few years, KZ Tandingan has rocked the pixie cuts and short ‘dos that gave her a winning edgy look.
The first time KZ debuted her pixie cut was in 2015 during Martin Nievera’s concert where she was a guest performer.
Since then, the singer underwent several hairstyle changes—from a lob, bobs, to the short-lived mullet. KZ currently maintains a bowl cut. Who knew bowl cuts could be this fab?
Jessy Mendiola
Jessy Mendiola surprised her fans when she had her hair cut to a bob in 2019.
She shared in her YouTube channel that she chose to have the hairstyle because she spends a lot of time at the beach and does scuba diving and she no longer wanted to be bothered by thinking of how to style her hair.
Jessy shocked her followers because not long after sporting a bob, she went for an even shorter hairstyle—a sleek pixie in ash blonde. She credited her look to celebrity hairstylist Antonio Papa, who also did her hair in the past.
Maricar Reyes-Poon
Maricar Reyes-Poon made a bold hairstyle transformation in 2016 with a pixie, which came years after sporting long locks.
But in 2018, she went even shorter with a barbered short pixie, courtesy of her trusted hairstylist Alex Carbonell.
Her hairstyle then may have been called wash-and-wear but Maricar perfected a styling routine that makes her hair extra-chic.
Maricar may be sporting longer tresses now but from time to time, she would post her photos in a pixie cut, which make us miss her shorter hair more.
Sue Ramirez
Sue Ramirez unveiled her daring new look in 2018 in an Instagram post.
Many sent their love for her new hairstyle then, which was a departure from her longer locks that rounded up her sweet image. Sue’s pixie gave her different looks depending on how she styled it—with pins, glitter, clips or sleek.
With Sue’s new hairstyle then came people questioning her sexual orientation, or asking the reason why she cut her hair short. She expressed frustration over the matter. “’Why did you cut your hair? Are you a lesbian?’ Such a stupid question. Is that how we base sexual orientation now? Hairstyle? Really?” she wrote on Instagram.
She later on clarified, “I am not offended to be called or asked if I am a lesbian. There is nothing wrong with being so. I just hate how people judge sexuality so easily nowadays. Stop assuming over meaningless sh*t.”
