Lip of faith: Hidilyn Diaz’s bold lipstick journey through the years
Happy National Lipstick Day!
Makeup enthusiasts have their own ways of adding that extra pop of color to their look, and that goes for whether they're working from home, out and about, or even weightlifting. You read that right.
The country's first Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz is no stranger to adding extra oomph to her makeup routine, as she's been open about being a makeup lover herself.
The weightlifter has gone to call her bold lip choices a "secret weapon" when it comes to representing the country during events.
“Kailangan medyo dark ang lipstick para hindi pale at pampsabi din sa kalaban na 'oops, hindi ako kinakabahan,’” the weightlifter once shared. “Ganun ang reason bakit kailangan ko mag makeup."
Besides being a weightlifting tactic, it's clear that Hidilyn herself enjoys glamming up. We took a deep dive through her Instagram and saw the makings of an athlete that proves women can do anything they want - and look however they please while doing so.
She started with subtle coral and pink shades back in her early days of training in 2015 and 2016
Before long, she soon entered into bold lip territory with mauves and reds, and even a few browns while training.
In one post dated March 25, 2017 Hidilyn can be seen happilly lipstick shopping with the caption "Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy makeup."
From then on, the celebrated weightlifter has been sharing glam shots, selfies, and even rigorous training sessions rocking bold lip colors. She even wore a dark red lip during the 2018 Asian Games when she won gold.
Her most recent bold lip look on social media was just this February, a few months before the history-making 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
With the entire nation now behind our champion, it didn't take long for cosmetics companies to send their well-wishes to Hidilyn. L’oreal Paris has pledged P2 million worth of support to all Filipina Olympians while Ever Bilena Cosmetics Inc, Hidilyn's supposed lip product of choice, will also give the athlete P1 million worth of cosmetics.
Glammed or not, with a bold lip or toned down, Hidilyn and the rest of the team Philippines Olympic team proves that we've gone past the days of gender stereotypes in the world of sports. Yes, women can lift record-breaking 127-kg barbells, and they can do it with their lips looking snatched.
