The biggest celebrity breakups of 2024
Breakups are tough, all the more so if there are so many people watching, spreading rumors, and speculating what led to them.
Whether they’re amicable or dramatic, public romances, when they end, become a hot topic on social media for days—or even weeks—depending on what caused them to go their separate ways. (Did they fall out of love? Was there a third party involved in their breakup?)
From cheating controversies to canceled engagements to divorces, here are the celebrity splits that made headlines in the entertainment scene in 2024.
AJ McLean and Rochelle Deanna McLean
Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean and Rochelle Deanna McLean announced their divorce in January, revealing at the time that they had been separated "for over a year now."
"While we have hoped for reconciliation, we have decided to officially end our marriage," they said in a joint statement, noting that they made the decision "with deep love and respect."
"Our focus now is moving forward in the healthiest possible way with friendship and co-parenting our girls at the forefront of this next chapter," they continued. "We appreciate your kindness, respect, and privacy at this time."
AJ and Rochelle tied the knot in December 2011. They share two children: Elliott and Lyric.
Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque
Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque decided to amicably end their engagement "after much thought, consideration, and care."
The former couple announced their split in February, saying it "was not an easy decision."
They first sparked dating speculations in 2019. After a period of being spotted together in similar locations, Bea confirmed their romance in August 2021, saying it “just came out naturally.” They got engaged in July 2023.
The actress previously said that they were planning to tie the knot this year.
Bea is currently single. Dominic, meanwhile, is now dating Sue Ramirez.
Michael and Carissa Alvarado
After being together for 12 years, Michael and Carissa Alvarado—who are collectively known as Us the Duo—announced that they have finalized their divorce in March.
"The two of us are no longer married, but we still have so much love for each other, and most importantly, for our daughter Xyla," the two said in a statement, adding that they've been living apart "for quite some time now."
"Although life looks a little bit different than before, we are both still creating and absolutely love being the best co-parents we can," they noted.
Michael and Carissa met in 2011 and exchanged "I dos" a year later. They started their musical career as a duo in 2013.
The former couple welcomed Xyla in 2018.
Sarah Lahbati and Richard Gutierrez
In March, Sarah Lahbati confirmed that she's single when asked about the rumors that she and Richard Gutierrez are no more.
"I mean there's nothing to hide. I think [it's] pretty clear to the public, both of us. I think," she said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.
The split speculations between them started in October last year when social media users noticed the couple hadn't been sharing photos of them together online and had been bonding with their children, Zion and Kai, separately. Two months later, Annabelle Rama, Richard's mother, revealed that he had been staying with her for a month.
The two, who got married in 2020 after dating for eight years, unfollowed each other on Instagram in January this year. They are now following a co-parenting setup.
Maris Racal and Rico Blanco
Maris Racal tearfully announced at a July press conference that she and Rico Blanco are no longer together.
"Rico and I are over," she said, crying. "It's fresh. It's been a few weeks. Loneliest, emptiest weeks I've ever experienced in my life."
According to Maris, she and Rico had a "very polite separation." She added, "Up to the very end of our relationship, it was still full of love, full of understanding. Rico is one of a kind."
Later this year, the actress got involved in a cheating controversy with her onscreen partner Anthony Jennings.
Paulina Sotto and Jed Llanes
Paulina Sotto opened up about her separation from Jed Llanes and navigating life as a single mother in July.
"This is the last thing I ever wanted for our family, but there are things that cannot be undone,” said the visual artist, who is the youngest daughter of Vic Sotto and Angela Luz.
Paulina and Jed got married in 2017 after dating for three years. They welcomed their daughter Sachi three years later.
Sue Ramirez and Javi Benitez
Javi Benitez confirmed that he and Sue Ramirez have "quietly" and "respectfully" called it quits earlier this year.
In a Facebook post in November, the Victorias City, Negros Occidental mayor said they put an end to their relationship "months ago."
"I look back with so much gratitude for the smiles, the laughter, and all the little joys we shared," he said. "I wish her nothing but happiness and the love she deserves. Here's to those good times, held close to my heart and to the grace of whatever lies ahead. I hope she continues to share her God-given talent with many more, touching lives as she has touched mine."
Javi and Sue were together for five years.
Jung Ho Yeon and Lee Dong Hwi
The talent agencies of Squid Game actress Jung Ho Yeon and Reply 1988 star Lee Dong Hwi confirmed that they have broken up after being together for nine years. Their managers noted that they will continue to be good colleagues in the entertainment industry.
The K-drama stars started dating in 2015 and only went public with their relationship a year later.
Jam Villanueva and Anthony Jennings
Anthony Jennings confirmed his breakup with his longtime partner Jam Villanueva in November, saying it was due to "personal reasons."
It came after Jam created buzz online with her TikTok reposts about pain, girl instinct, and cheating, raising speculations that she and Anthony have split up.
Weeks after the breakup confirmation, Anthony got involved in a cheating scandal with Maris after Jam posted screenshots of the love team's conversations that ranged from flirty to intimate. Anthony and Maris have apologized for what they did in separate statements.
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly
A month after announcing that they're expecting a child, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly (real name: Colson Baker) broke up.
Entertainment portal TMZ reported in December that the actress and the rapper separated in November after she "found material" on his phone that was "upsetting."
Megan and MGK began dating in March 2020 and went public with their romance in May of the same year. They got engaged in January 2022.
Their baby is reportedly due in March.
Rufa Mae Quinto and Trevor Magallanes
Rufa Mae Quinto and Trevor Magallanes are in the process of divorce.
After months of breakup speculations, Magallanes announced that they're ending their eight-year marriage in his Instagram stories in December.
"I felt like I need to explain myself based on social media and all that. I want to make myself clear that Rufa Mae and I are in the process of a divorce," the financial analyst said in an Instagram story.
The two tied the knot in November 2016. They welcomed their daughter Athena in February the following year.
