Angelica Panganiban undergoes hip core decompression surgery for her bone condition
Angelica Panganiban recently underwent hip core decompression surgery, months after she revealed she had a bone condition.
In a vlog published on YouTube on July 13, the actress documented her surgery journey, sharing how she was in the hospital earlier in the month.
While she was confined, Angelica had her husband Gregg Homan by her side. Their daughter Amila Sabine, also paid her visits, but the actress got emotional as it would be the first time she would be apart for several nights from her child.
The surgery took about seven hours. "Sobrang sakit, hindi ko ma-explain ang sakit," the actress said in the vlog.
"'Yung pain levels ko naman, maluwag 'yung balkang ko. May ginhawa na akong naramdaman finally. Siyempre masakit 'yung pain from surgery, masakit 'yung muscles ko pero it's getting better every day," she said on her third day of recovery.
In November 2023, Angelica shared that she suffered a bone condition called avascular necrosis, which the Mayo Clinic defines as the death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply.
In her new vlog, the actress added that she started experiencing pain around July 2022 when she was pregnant. After giving birth, she then continued to feel aches while working out so she had it checked out.
She started PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment but she noticed that she wasn't getting better. "Mas nag-woworse 'yung pain niya. Pasakit lang siya ng pasakit."
Then in July this year, Angelica began to vomit after drinking pain medicines and to limp so they sought further medical help.
"Noong makita ng doctor 'yung x-ray ko, napansin niya na merong slight collapse 'yung left hip ko. 'Di pa siya totally nag-co-collapse pero bumabagsak na 'yung kaliwa kong balakang kaya nag-li-limp na ako, kaya todo na 'yung pain. So noong hiningi namin suggestion anong dapat gawin, ayaw din niya ako bigyan ng hip replacement, so binigyan niya ako ng core decompression [surgery]," she shared.
According to Stanford Medicine, core decompression involves surgical drilling into the area of dead bone near the joint to reduce pressure, increase blood flow, and slow or stop bone and joint deconstruction.
After the surgery, Angelica said that she had not experienced avascular necrosis pain for the first time in two years. As of the recording of her vlog, the actress used a wheelchair as she must avoid walking and standing for three weeks. Afterward, she can do partial weight bearing and eventually exercise.
