Taylor Lautner revealed it was Taylor Swift who called it quits in their romance in 2009, and shared how they were able to rekindle their friendship years after.

In his guesting on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, the Twilight star confirmed that it was Swift who decided to end their brief relationship in 2009.

“Yes, absolutely,” he said after initially hesitating. “I’m thinking back on exactly what happened. But no, yeah, she did,” he added.

He also shared insights on how they managed to build their friendship, emphasizing that mutual respect played a significant role in moving on and reconnecting years after the breakup.

“I think when you respect somebody for who they are, like in their soul, it allows you to move on, forgive, and continue that love in a different way,” Lautner said. “Thankfully, we have that.”

He noted how they “were so young” at the time, and shared that they didn’t actually reconnect for a while.

“We stayed friendly, we would see each other now and then. But we then did fall out of touch and didn’t talk for a while,” he said, adding, “But I’ve always had the deepest respect for who she is as a person before anything else.”

Lautner said it’s been “fantastic” especially recently, and said that being friends again with Swift has been “one of the greater things to happen” in his life.

“Honestly I would say one of the greater things to happen in my life over the last year is the rekindling of our friendship,” he shared.

“She is just above anything else that she is, she is just a wonderful human,” he added. “And pretty great to have in your life.”

The two dated briefly in 2009 and are also known for their roles in the romantic-comedy film Valentine’s Day released in 2010.

They made headlines in July this year during the re-release of Swift’s album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) which included one of the hit tracks Back to December, which is widely known to be about her brief romance with Lautner.

He also took part in her music video for I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) From the Vault) track with actress Joey King and Presley Cash. Lautner also made a special surprise appearance in her Eras Tour in Kansas City on July 7.

On stage, Lautner heaped praise on Swift, saying: "Taylor, I respect you so much. Not just for the singer you are, the songwriter, the performer, but for the human you are. You are gracious, humble, kind and I am honored to know you.”

Lautner is now married to Taylor Dome, an “OG T-Swift fan” who once referred to Speak Now as "one of the best albums of all time."

Swift, meanwhile, is now in a relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs.
