Demi Lovato embraces fluidity of gender, uses 'she/her' pronouns anew alongside 'they/them'
Since coming out as non-binary and using "they/them" as pronouns last year, singer Demi Lovato is embracing the fluidity of their gender and adopts using "she/her" anew.
In case you missed it, Lovato in May 2021 announced that they're identifying as non-binary, an umbrella term for an individual that falls into neither the male nor female gender binary. These individuals may identify themselves as genderqueer or genderfluid, among other terms. During March that year, Lovato identified as a pansexual, or someone who feels an attraction to anyone, including individuals who do not identify as a specific gender.
But in an interview over the Spout podcast early Aug. 3 Manila time, Lovato said she's been "feeling more feminine" again lately.
"I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, she told host Tamara Dhia, "and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and am still discovering."
To date, her Instagram bio states that she's using both "she/her" and "they/them."
The 29-year-old noted that especially last year, her energy was balanced in between being masculine and feminine. She recalled walking into a bathroom with the women and men signages, to which she "didn't feel like there's a bathroom" for her.
"I didn't feel necessarily like a woman. I didn't feel like a man. I just felt like a human," Lovato said. "That's what they/them is about for me."
She said using pronouns is "feeling human" at one's core, and it's important to get it right.
"But I think what's important is, like, nobody's perfect," Lovato noted. "Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It's just all about respect."
