‘SNSD, when?’: K-pop fans call for Girls’ Generation’s reunion after 2NE1’s Coachella performance

Published Apr 17, 2022 3:45 pm

2022 is shaping up to be the rebirth of K-pop’s 2nd Generation, and we are loving it.

For those who’ve missed Coachella, K-pop fans sent social media ablaze after veteran girl group 2NE1 reunited for a surprise performance of their 2011 hit song I Am The Best. The quartet made a sudden appearance during soloist and 2NE1’s former leader, CL’s set at the music festival.

As 2NE1 dominated the trending topics, K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation (SNSD) has also been mentioned by fans on social media. The eight-member group is known as one of the industry’s biggest names and is famously known as the “Nation’s Girl Group” in South Korea.

2NE1 and Girls’ Generation were considered rival groups in K-pop’s 2nd Generation since they released many hit songs during the peak of their careers. Of course, there were no catfights between the members of both groups—but their songs have always faced off on the local and international music charts.

SNSD has yet to announce their reunion. But fans have always been eager for Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun to set the stage on fire. Here are some of the best reactions we found on the internet.

Twitter user @LueeePark said SNSD’s leader Taeyeon should gather the members to perform their 2011 hit song The Boys again.

“I need snsd to perform the boys at Coachella next,” @aericxs wrote.

@heavymetalhater, meanwhile, said 2022 is “the year of 2nd gen [girl groups] to strike back,” referring to 2NE1’s reunion and former Sistar member Hyolyn’s appearance in the Korean survival series Queendom 2

“SNSD after that 2ne1 reunion,” @lalatreese tweeted, attaching a reaction video of Taeyeon and Tiffany while looking at their phones.

Twitter user @legitrosho, on the other hand, said 2NE1’s reunion was a moment of “world peace for kpop hags” since the fans of both girl groups expressed their support for one another.

“This is 2022 right? seeing 2NE1, BIGBANG, and SNSD names on trending makes me think it's on 2011 or something,” @teuviosa wrote.

“2ne1 reuniting and performing at coachella… SNSD WHEN,” @soshyul said.

@syjungies uploaded a reaction video of SNSD “reacting” to 2NE1’s reunion.

“This isn’t an SNSD-related post but I'm blown away by the power of 2NE1 at Coachella, simply iconic.  A ‘Hi’ to the 2nd generation. Legends,” @SNSDChartsbr tweeted.

Twitter user @foxypeachie can’t believe 2NE1’s reunion happened “sooner than SNSD and BIGBANG.”

“How is taeyeon stopping snsd from making a comeback when she’s the one constantly giving us music still with sm and being put in project group with 4th gen idols and helping the group brand be relevant,” @TaeyeonFindMe wrote.

Girls’ Generation debuted as a nine-member unit in August 2007 with the single Into The New World. Jessica, who was the girl group’s main vocalist, departed the group in September 2014

Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun, on the other hand, left the group’s entertainment label SM Entertainment in October 2017, but they remained members of Girls’ Generation. The remaining members have been actively pursuing solo ventures in the entertainment industry, as of this writing.

Some of Girls’ Generation’s most popular songs include Gee, Genie, The Boys, Party, and Lion Heart, among others.
